When I first joined Hirata sensei's dojo (1971 Seattle Aikikai), he was 4 dan Hombu Aikikai.  Shortly after he was promoted to 5th dan.  I refer to that time as learning Tohei Aikido since Tohei sensei hadn't formalized his ki teaching methods and emphasis was put equally on technique as well as ki.  From 1973 onward Hirata focused on teaching Ki Aikido and after 1974 it was Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido.
